Cargo e-bikes are replacing the second car for a lot of families in the CBD and surrounding suburbs. They're also heavy, expensive and awkward to store — so test before you buy.

Same rules apply
A cargo e-bike is still an e-bike: 250 W continuous, assistance to 25 km/h, pedal-assist (walk mode throttle to 6 km/h only).1,2 A big motor doesn't make a bike more legal just because it's carrying kids.
Longtail or front-loader?
- Longtail: rides like a normal bike, easier to store, carries 1–2 kids on the back with the right seats and footrests.
- Front-loader (bakfiets): kids in a box you can see, great for shopping, but long and harder to park or fit through gates.
- Trike: stable at standstill, very wide — check your paths and laneways.
What to check
- Manufacturer's maximum load and child-carrying approval [verify per model].
- Strong brakes (hydraulic discs) and a stable double kickstand.
- Where it lives: ground floor access, gate width, charging spot (see battery safety).
- Helmets for everyone — kids included.2
- A local dealer who services cargo bikes.
